About Defence Food Research Laboratory Mysore

Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) is a Government of India research laboratory functioning under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence. Located at Siddarth Nagar in Mysore, Karnataka, DFRL specialises in research and development in Food Science and Technology, with its work directed towards addressing food-related requirements of the Armed Forces.

DFRL was established on 28 December 1961 at Mysore under the aegis of DRDO. Its research programme has developed around the challenges of supplying safe, nutritious and suitable food products under demanding operational and environmental conditions.

The laboratory works across several areas of food technology, including the development of long-shelf-life convenience foods, preservation technologies, food packaging, nutritional evaluation, food safety and testing technologies. Its research also covers processing and storage technologies for frozen and chilled foods and the development of rapid testing methods for food-quality and safety requirements.

DFRL's work extends beyond conventional food processing. Current DRDO technology programmes associated with the laboratory include military food processing, food packaging, food quality and safety, alternative proteins and space-food technologies. These activities demonstrate the laboratory's role in applying scientific research to specialised food requirements.

The laboratory also supports advanced research opportunities. DRDO recruitment documents show opportunities for researchers in areas such as Food Science, Food Technology, Food Processing Engineering, Food Science and Nutrition, Biochemistry and related disciplines, with selected research fellows being facilitated to register for Ph.D. programmes.
